Misrepresentation – THE Spice Girls
The Spice Girls were a UK Group, officially established in 1994. They emerged from a group originally known as Touch, which was formed by Chris and Bob Herbert, a father and son management team trading as Heart Management. The original line-up of Touch consisted of Victoria Adams, Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm, Geri Halliwell and Michelle Stephenson. However in 1993, Michelle Stephenson left and was replaced by Emma Bunton. Geri Halliwell, the oldest member of the group, apparently came up with the name “Spice”. This was later changed to the Spice Girls, because the name “Spice” was already in use by a rapper in the USA.
In October 1994 the girls left Heart Management, allegedly taking the backing tracks of the songs they had been working on with them. They signed with Simon Fuller from XIX Entertainment in March 1995. Later that year they signed a record deal with Virgin Records and agreed a publishing deal with Windswept Pacific.
The group released their debut single, Wannabe, in June 1996, accompanied by a video filmed at St Pancras station in London. The single spent seven weeks at number one in the UK charts. Overall, it was top of the charts in 31 countries, and became the biggest selling single ever by an all-girls group. In July 1996, a feature in Top of the Pops magazine gave the Spice Girls nicknames: Posh (Victoria Adams), Baby (Emma Bunton), Scary (Melanie Brown), Sporty (Melanie Chisholm) and Ginger (Geri Halliwell). These were quickly adopted by the group.
The group’s debut album, Spice, was released in November 1996. Two million copies were sold in the first two weeks, and it became the biggest selling album of 1996 in the UK, and the biggest selling album of 1997 in the USA. At the same time, Simon Fuller set up a range of valuable sponsorship deals for the group with Pepsi, Walkers, Impulse, Cadbury’s and Polaroid. The deal with Pepsi eventually led to the release of a promotional single which fans could get for free, having collected special Pepsi ring-pulls.
In February 1997 the group collected two Brit Awards: one for Say You’ll Be There as Best Video and one for Wannabe as Best Single. The group was not universally popular however. Liam Gallagher, from Oasis, refused to attend the event and commented that, if he did, he would "probably chin the Spice Girls". Later that month, the group out-performed the Beatles, in becoming the first British group to have a US number one with their first single. In March 1997, Mama/Who Do You Think You Are went straight into the UK charts at number one, making the Spice Girls the first group in history to have four consecutive number one hits. Despite the chart success, the group’s first live UK gig did not take place until May 1997, at the Prince’s Trust 21st Anniversary Concert. Afterwards Prince Charles admitted to being a fan of the group.
In November 1997, the group members decided to remove Simon Fuller as their manager and do it themselves.
